Make It a Day Trip
There’s much to enjoy in the area surrounding Walpole, N.H. Opening in June is a needlework exhibit that features hooked pieces as described below. Just a stroll away in this picturesque New England village is the home to the nationally renowned Burdick’s Chocolates with its restaurant and café. With an expresso/ tea one can enjoy lunch or savor a mouth- watering confection or artisan French pastry. Next door is the Walpole Grocery with natural gourmet foods many locally sourced. Other recommended eateries are within a short walking distance. Across the street from Burdick’s is the Walpole Artisan’s Cooperative shop and around the corner the unique Ruggle’s and Hunt boutique. If time allows, a short drive away is Allison’s Orchard high atop a hill overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. Check out their website for special events and orchard offerings that change with the season.
The Walpole Historical Society Museum’s new exhibit is titled “Busy Hands-the industry and art of fabric and needlework in the community”. The display consists of historic and contemporary needlework of many kinds from the Walpole area. Included in the collection are hooked rugs, wall hangings and mats of both present and past members of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild who live in this area.
The museum’s award winning children’s exhibit, featuring children’s clothing from the 1800’s to the 1960’s, is also of interest.
The gift shop features new wooden toys and puzzles for children. Colorful stained glass pieces, scarves, napkins, candles, mugs and other items are also for sale.
The Walpole Historical Society Museum, 32 Main St., Walpole, N.H., will have its season open Saturday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m. and will be open every Saturday during those hours through Columbus Day weekend. The museum is also open by appointment; call 603-756-3449.
While on the road, why not detour and stop at Dorr to replenish your stash? It’s only about an hour away.
